When Should I See A Doctor?

Suffering from eye discomfort? Wondering if you should see a doctor?

In general, cases that require immediate attention include:

  • Trauma to the eye (from sports-related activities, falling down)
  • Presence of foreign body in the eye (chemicals, dust, sharp objects)
  • Sharp pain in eyes
  • Sudden increase in floaters and flashes/”curtain” effect (may be indicative of retinal tears or retinal detachment)

If your eyes are feeling dry, itchy, or red, you may want to try applying lubricating eye drops first (they are readily available at most pharmacies). However, if symptoms are prolonged or increasingly severe, it is best to consult a doctor. Symptoms may be indicative of a more severe eye condition.

Should I Consult a General Practitioner? Must I Go to An Eye Specialist?

For eye-related problems, it is best to consult an Ophthalmologist (eye doctor). General Practitioners (GP), understandably, only carry a small range of eye drops and may not have the necessary clinical equipment to diagnose certain eye conditions. If you are suffering from an urgent condition that can potentially cause vision loss, go straight to a specialist.

However, those who have insurance policies that require a referral letter may want to visit a GP first (provided that the condition is not urgent).
