Epi-LASIK

What is Epi-LASIK?

Epi-LASIK a type of LASIK.

Epi-LASIK is also known as TransPRK, PRK, Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA), or LASEK.

How is Epi-LASIK different from LASIK?

During “normal” LASIK, an IntraLase machine is used to create a flap, following which an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea.

Epi-LASIK is a flapless LASIK method. Instead of creating a flap, the surgeon removes the epithelium of the cornea. Aside from that, the remaining treatment steps are the same as those in normal LASIK.

Are Flapless LASIK Methods Always Better?

Both flap (LASIK, iLASIK) and flapless methods have their advantages and disadvantages. It is incorrect to say that one is better than the other.

A doctor will be able to make a recommendation based on your eye condition. It is best to look for a clinic that offers both methods.

Who is Epi-LASIK suitable For?

Epi-LASIK is more painful and has longer recovery times. For this reason, we would recommend normal LASIK for most patients.

However, for patients with thin corneas, Epi-LASIK is a good treatment option.
